For our VRIC program, we focus on teaching a step up curriculum. A step up curriculum is based on teaching the basics first then showing the harder versions or teaching more complicated techniques as they advance to higher belts.
The technique requires patience and practice to get to the next level. Everyone starts at the white belt level and advances through belt tests.
What the different belts focus on:
- White belts focus on basic kicks, blocks and strikes so they can start learning how to defend themselves when they get to the next belt
- Yellow belts start learning how to fight and defend themselves. They are also now introduced to putting techniques together to learn a kata.
- Orange belts have to perfect all of their material from white belt and yellow belt so they can move on to the intermediate belts.
- Green belts start learning judo and how to use it for self defense purpose.
- Blue belts now are now able to learn how to use weapons. If they choose to join the weapons class, they will alternate every three months learning the basics of different weapons like sword, bo staff, etc.
- Purple belts are the last of the intermediate belts. They have to know all of the material and do it with power and control.
- Red belts have so much material they have to learn that they are expected to go to a red belt class. The class focuses on their material specifically which takes an hour just to go over. In addition, Red Belts now have to learn how to mentor their peers.
- High Red belts are required to perform the red belt techniques at a higher level as well as expand upon that knowledge with more complicated sequences of techniques.
- Brown belts are required to master all the previous belt levels. The expectations for brown belts are higher than ever before. In addition, their teaching ability should be much better than the red belt level.
- High Brown belts are required to create their own kata and simulated fight. They are also expected to perfect all the previous techniques and learn how to teach very effectively before becoming a black belt.
